There is no large, direct market that quotes INR against NPR, so the realistic rate is built in two steps through the US dollar — the currency both India and Nepal actually trade against. First we convert INR to dollars at India's parallel rate, then dollars to NPR at Nepal's parallel rate.
Put numerically: 1 INR ÷ 103 (INR per USD) ≈ $0.009709, then × 157 (NPR per USD) ≈ 1.524 NPR. Using the street rate on both legs gives a far more realistic figure than multiplying two official rates that may be impossible to obtain.
Why the parallel INR/NPR rate differs from the official cross
Both of these currencies carry a parallel-market premium of their own. In India, the gap is driven by current-account convertibility limits, global risk sentiment, oil-import demand; in Nepal, by dollar demand for imports, remittance inflows, inflation. Because each official rate can overstate what its currency is really worth, an official INR/NPR cross can be doubly misleading.
Today India shows a modest premium of about 8.9%, while Nepal shows a modest premium of about 5.9%. The parallel cross-rate already bakes both of these gaps in, which is why it reflects what traders actually pay.
