Kenyan Shilling (KES) to Ugandan Shilling (UGX) — Parallel Market Cross-Rate
As of June 6, 2026, 1 KES is worth about 28.794 UGX, and 1 UGX is worth about 0.0347 KES, using Kenya's and Uganda's parallel (black market) exchange rates. We derive this cross-rate by bridging both currencies through the US dollar: in Kenya one dollar trades near 129 KES on the street, and in Uganda one dollar trades near 3,712 UGX.
For everyday amounts that means roughly 1,000 KES ≈ 28,794 UGX, and 10,000 KES ≈ 287,939 UGX, at today's parallel rates.
Kenya and Uganda anchor the East African Community, with goods, fuel and shillings flowing across the Busia and Malaba borders every day.
How the KES to UGX cross-rate is calculated
There is no large, direct market that quotes KES against UGX, so the realistic rate is built in two steps through the US dollar — the currency both Kenya and Uganda actually trade against. First we convert KES to dollars at Kenya's parallel rate, then dollars to UGX at Uganda's parallel rate.
Put numerically: 1 KES ÷ 129 (KES per USD) ≈ $0.007758, then × 3,712 (UGX per USD) ≈ 28.794 UGX. Using the street rate on both legs gives a far more realistic figure than multiplying two official rates that may be impossible to obtain.
Why the parallel KES/UGX rate differs from the official cross
Both of these currencies carry a parallel-market premium of their own. In Kenya, the gap is driven by seasonal dollar demand, import-cover pressure, regional remittance flows; in Uganda, by regional trade flows, import demand, remittances. Because each official rate can overstate what its currency is really worth, an official KES/UGX cross can be doubly misleading.
Today Kenya shows a very small premium of about -0.3%, while Uganda shows a very small premium of about 0.7%. The parallel cross-rate already bakes both of these gaps in, which is why it reflects what traders actually pay.
Kenya and Uganda: who converts KES to UGX?
Kenya and Uganda anchor the East African Community, with goods, fuel and shillings flowing across the Busia and Malaba borders every day.
The Kenyan shilling is largely market-determined, so its parallel premium is usually narrower than in tightly controlled economies. Kampala's active forex-bureau market keeps the Ugandan shilling's street rate close to, but rarely identical to, the official quote.
