Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) to Kenyan Shilling (KES) — Parallel Market Cross-Rate
As of June 6, 2026, 1 TZS is worth about 0.0485 KES, and 1 KES is worth about 20.638 TZS, using Tanzania's and Kenya's parallel (black market) exchange rates. We derive this cross-rate by bridging both currencies through the US dollar: in Tanzania one dollar trades near 2,642 TZS on the street, and in Kenya one dollar trades near 128 KES.
For everyday amounts that means roughly 1,000 TZS ≈ 48.454 KES, and 10,000 TZS ≈ 484.544 KES, at today's parallel rates.

How the TZS to KES cross-rate is calculated
There is no large, direct market that quotes TZS against KES, so the realistic rate is built in two steps through the US dollar — the currency both Tanzania and Kenya actually trade against. First we convert TZS to dollars at Tanzania's parallel rate, then dollars to KES at Kenya's parallel rate.
Put numerically: 1 TZS ÷ 2,642 (TZS per USD) ≈ $0.000379, then × 128 (KES per USD) ≈ 0.0485 KES. Using the street rate on both legs gives a far more realistic figure than multiplying two official rates that may be impossible to obtain.
Why the parallel TZS/KES rate differs from the official cross
Both of these currencies carry a parallel-market premium of their own. In Tanzania, the gap is driven by seasonal dollar demand, import financing, tourism inflows; in Kenya, by seasonal dollar demand, import-cover pressure, regional remittance flows. Because each official rate can overstate what its currency is really worth, an official TZS/KES cross can be doubly misleading.
Today Tanzania shows a very small premium of about 0.8%, while Kenya shows a very small premium of about -0.3%. The parallel cross-rate already bakes both of these gaps in, which is why it reflects what traders actually pay.
Tanzania and Kenya: who converts TZS to KES?
Tourism, trade and cross-border commerce link Kenya and Tanzania, keeping the two shillings in constant comparison.
Tanzania's shilling trades through licensed bureaus, with parallel quotes surfacing when dollar liquidity tightens. The Kenyan shilling is largely market-determined, so its parallel premium is usually narrower than in tightly controlled economies.
