Staying Safe in Parallel Currency Markets
Parallel markets carry real risks. Scammers, counterfeit notes, and fraudulent agents are common. Here is how to protect yourself.
Use Escrow-Protected Platforms
Binance P2P, Paxful, and LocalBitcoins offer escrow — the seller's crypto is locked until payment is confirmed. Never release crypto or send cash without confirmation from the platform's escrow system.
Verify Rates Before Transacting
Use Parallel Exchange to check the current median rate before any transaction. If someone offers you a rate dramatically better than the market, it is almost certainly a scam. Scammers attract victims with impossible rates then disappear after payment.
Meet in Safe Locations
For cash transactions, always meet in busy, public places — bank lobbies, shopping malls. Never meet unknown parties in private locations for large sums.
Verify Banknotes
Counterfeit USD, EUR, and local notes are common in informal markets. Always use a UV light and check security threads on large denomination bills.
Red Flags
- Requests for upfront fees before exchange
- Rates more than 10% better than market
- Pressure to transact quickly
- Refusal to use escrow on P2P platforms
